How SIG Puts the ‘A’ in STEAM

by Summer Institute for the Gifted
Learn how we put the A in STEAM at the Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG)

The ‘A’ was added to STEM for a good reason. Arts education through STEAM provides students with the creative thinking and communication skills necessary for innovation. STEAM incorporates artistic concepts vital to STEM fields, such as design principles and visual-spatial skills. This multidisciplinary approach to teaching STEM is increasingly becoming important as the fields of STEM and the arts overlap more and more. Technology is now a fundamental component of nearly all industries. Meanwhile, creative thinking skills gained through arts education is necessary for innovation in STEM fields such as medicine, engineering, and robotics.

The Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG) offers unique programming for gifted and talented students ages 5-17 during the summer and school year. The SIG STEAM + curriculum focuses on applying creative thinking across multiple disciplines to solve real-world problems. Through an innovative curriculum that spans all facets of STEAM, plus humanities and fitness, SIG challenges students to utilize knowledge of different disciplines to discover creative solutions.

SIG offers courses in arts including graphic design, songwriting, film, and theater. The SIG STEAM + curriculum takes a multidisciplinary approach to courses and incorporates arts and creative thinking into science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and more.

Below are just a few examples of the exciting STEAM courses at SIG:

Under the Sea: Humans at Work (Ages 5-6)

As you consider ways scientists could live under the sea, you’ll need to learn what humans need to survive. After examining designs of other marine habitats, doing experiments, and participating in problem-solving activities, design a habitat where ocean scientists can live and work.

Magical Science (Ages 5-6)

Combine theater with science! Many tricks that magicians use are illusions based on scientific principles. From chemistry principles and laws of physics, you can put a trick up your sleeve! Join us for a magician’s show and pull out magic tricks that wow and captivate your audience, using science.

Amusement Park Physics (Ages 9-10)

Experiment with time, distance, and speed and construct your very own ride that showcases the feats we can accomplish with the laws of physics!

Engineering Your Future (Ages 11-12)

Use your tinkering hands to invent solutions that utilize scientific and mathematical principles to design towns, machinery, toys, and other products that will enhance life in the future.

Sphero Robotics (Ages 11-12)

Come learn how to program using Blockly and text coding through JavaScript using Sphero robots! Explore multidisciplinary activities that allow the use of coding fundamentals and engineering design principles to build mazes and obstacle courses that your Sphero can experience. Roll into real-world applications with robotics and release your imagination.

Graphic Design: Where Art Meets Technology (Ages 9-17)

In this class, you’ll be introduced to character building, plot, and setting as you look at various graphic novels. Come strengthen your vocabulary, build your reading confidence, and have fun drawing your action pictures. Increase your appreciation of storytelling as you create your own graphic novel!

Your Art, Your Way (Ages 9-17)

Experiment with a variety of media, such as pencils, paints, sculpture, and origami to explore techniques of color theory, shading, perspective, and positive and negative space. Choose your preferred medium and create an original, displayable work that expresses who you are!

Melodious Music (Ages 5-12)

Come rock and roll with us and learn how to train your ear to listen for rhythm, beats, and pitch. Develop instrumental skills by playing pitched instruments, such as a recorder, and unpitched percussions such as hand drums, shakers, triangles, rhythm sticks, and much more. Harmonize using homemade instruments and create melodies that enrich your musical talent and creativity.

Children’s Theater Play (Ages 5-12)

Enjoy an introduction to the fantasy world created in the theater. Examine various aspects of theater production, including taking on an acting role, analyzing a scene, designing a set, and performing for others. Play theater games, improvise, create a stage presence, and create characters.

Be a Graphic Novelist (Ages 7-8)

In this class, you’ll be introduced to character building, plot, and setting as you look at various graphic novels. Come strengthen your vocabulary, build your reading confidence, and have fun drawing your action pictures. Increase your appreciation of storytelling as you create your own graphic novel!
